Dr. Sid Suryanarayanan will present his research on Smart Cities.
Abstract: Cities, large and small, the world over are on the verge of infrastructural modernization. At the heart of this transformation is the need for smart electric distribution systems enabled by an unprecedented access to new technologies, data, controllability, and options for end-users to participate in the daily operations of the electric network. To realize the full potential of this transformation there is a dire need for new architectures, markets, tools, techniques, and testbeds. In that regard, this talk will describe some essential characteristics of a smart infrastructure. Further, the next-generation demand response, an emerging philosophy of asset management in electric grids, will be explored as a potential enabler for the emergence of these smart infrastructures. Some new research results from on-going efforts using high-performance computing at Colorado State University will also be presented.
