A Refresher on Transmission Line Parameters Calculation for Short-Circuit Analysis

November 12 @ 3:00 PM - 3:50 PM MST

The main functions of transmission lines are to carry the electrical energy from generating power plants where it is produced to load centers where it is used, or for interconnection purposes to transfer energy from one system to another. Line modeling is used for a variety of power system analysis, and the model and set of parameters used to represent the transmission line depends on the phenomena to be studied: For load flow and electromechanical transients, the parameters used are the positive sequence. In the short-circuit calculation the positive/negative/zero sequence (symmetrical components) parameters. For electromagnetic transients the phase parameters and its frequency-dependent parameters. From a system protection point of view, the positive, negative and zero sequence representation of a transmission line is of interest. The correct calculation of these parameters is crucial to determine the proper settings for relay coordination. Thus, this presentation provides a short refresher of the theoretical background and practical guidelines for calculating the parameters of AC overhead transmission lines Speaker(s): Dr. Franklin L.
