Historic Fall River Hydro Plant tour in Estes Park

May 19 @ 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Co-sponsored by: John Cowdrey

Constructed in 1909 to produce electricity for the Stanley Hotel and surrounding areas, F. O. Stanley sold the plant to the Public Service Company of Colorado in 1928. In 1945, the Town of Estes Park purchased and maintained the Hydro plant until it was severely damaged in 1982 by the Lawn Lake Flood. The Historic Fall River Hydro plant was restored and opened to the public as an interpretive center in 2002 and features original equipment installed by Stanley, machinery from an addition in 1921, and a diesel unit installed by the Public Service Company in 1938. Interpretive panels document the growth of Estes Park, its insatiable need for electricity, and the Lawn Lake Flood disaster.

Speaker(s): John Cowdrey,

Agenda:

Facility Tour

The Fall River Hydro is located off of Fall River Road (which is Highway 34), west of Estes Park and almost to the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park.  The address is 1754 Fish Hatchery Rd., Estes Park, CO 80517.  Taking Fall River Road west of Estes, look for a turnoff to the left that is marked “Cemetery” and “Museum”.  This road parallels Hwy 34.  Take it almost to the end, and the hydro plant is on the left.  The plant is almost to the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park however, if you reach the Park entrance, you have gone too far.
